Background:Augmentin is a combination antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in patients who are not responding to amoxicillin and other oral antibiotics. This combination is an oral antibiotic, and it is not approved for use in the United States. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Augmentin as compared to other commonly used oral antibiotics (amoxicillin, ceftriaxone) in reducing the rate of bacterial resistance in the gut bacteria. Methods: Prospective, single-blind, randomised controlled study. Patients with bacterial pneumonia. Patients with severe bacterial infections. Patients treated with Augmentin (5/1,000mg). Results: The mean age of the patients was 68 years (range, 37-87 years). A total of 4 patients developed bacterial resistance to all the antibiotics, with an incidence of 5.6%. There was no significant difference between the 2 groups regarding their age, gender, and type of infection (p = 0.55). There was no difference in their clinical presentation at the time of randomisation (p = 0.42). The most common pathogens wereHaemophilus ducreyi,Haemophilus influenzaeStreptococcus pneumoniaeStreptococcus pyogenesStreptococcus agalactiaeandHaemophilus parainfluenzae. All patients received amoxicillin and ceftriaxone. There was no difference between the groups regarding the type of infection (p = 0.68), age, gender, and type of infection (p = 0.84). The mean duration of therapy was 14 days (range, 3-46 days). The number of hospitalizations (p = 0.02) and the incidence of infections were significantly higher in the patients receiving amoxicillin compared to the patients receiving ceftriaxone (p = 0.003). Analysis of the data revealed that the antibiotic treatment was more successful when compared to the alternative antibiotics (p = 0.021). Results showed that the mean number of hospitalizations was significantly higher in patients receiving amoxicillin compared to those receiving ceftriaxone (p = 0.03).
